Government advancing development of Annandale community ground

The government is advancing works to complete the development of the Annandale, Marshon Community Ground on the East Coast of Demerara, with fencing, lighting and landfilling already completed and additional facilities being added.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr. made the disclosure during a community consultation at the ground on Friday, noting that the project has faced significant challenges due to the low-lying nature of the area.

“This one is probably one of my hardest of all the 400-plus grounds that we have invested in,” Minister Ramson said.

He said that the government invested in more than 650 community grounds and provided lighting at over 150 facilities across the country.

At the Annandale ground, the works include the construction of a pavilion, turnstile access, children’s play equipment and exercise facilities.

The minister said the project is expected to be completed in approximately two months.

Minister Ramson explained that the ground was previously several feet below the surrounding road and seawall, making it particularly vulnerable to water accumulation and delaying the completion of works.

He noted, however, the government’s investment in community spaces is intended to provide residents with safe and functional areas for recreation and community activities.

“These small community projects, it means a lot to the community,” Minister Ramson said, adding that the development of the spaces creates opportunities for residents to come together and make greater use of their communities.

The minister also highlighted the importance of community consultation in determining how the facilities are developed, noting that residents’ views are integral to the process.

“Your views are important to us,” Minister Ramson told residents, encouraging them to participate in discussions on the development and use of the facility.
